В вышеприведённых функциях герундий переводится существительным или инфинитивом.
They spoke about their travelling. Они говорили о своём путешествии (о том, как они путешествовали).
В данной функции герундий переводится существительным или придаточным предложением.
Learning rules without examples is of little use. Изучение правил (изучать правила) без примеров приносит мало пользы.

PS Форма герундия зависит от формы глагола в предложении — если глагол был в форме Past Simple, то и герундий будет в форме Simple (sentence 1). Если же глагол в форме Past Perfect, то и герундий будет в форме Perfect — такие вот дела.
