Gerund. Герундий. Теория и упражнения (intermediate — уровень 2)

Прежде чем продолжить изучение герундия, давайте вспомним основные случаи его употребления в предложении. Кто забыл, читайте Gerund или Герундий в английском языке .

Изучите примеры ниже. Назовите герундий.

• She thinks of entering an Institute. (1)
• He insisted on my telling him the truth. (2)
• He objected to Ann’s going there alone. (2)
• I remember seeing this film (3).
• I like getting up early (4).

Из примеров видно, что как существительное, герундий может сочетаться с предлогами (пример 1) и определяться притяжательным местоимением или существительным в притяжательном падеже (пример 2). Как глагол, герундий может иметь при себе прямое дополнение (пример 3) и определяться наречием (пример 4).

1. I love dancing. — Мне нравится танцевать.
2. I love her dancing. — Мне нравится, как она танцует.
3. I love my daughter dancing. — Мне нравится, как танцует моя дочь.

Теперь выполним несколько упражнений на повторение, а затем рассмотрим более сложные случаи употребления герундия в английском предложении, а именно:

Упражнение 1 (повторение). Образуйте герундий от глагола в скобках и переведите предложение. Почему надо в данном случае использовать герундий?

1. Start … about pleasant things — and you’ll be happy! (think)
2. Americans enjoy … houses and … to new places. (change/ move)
3. Would you like to go … in the sea? (sail)
4. Most people enjoy … in the sun. (lie)
5. I haven’t had my lunch yet. Do you mind … outside for ten minutes? (wait)
6. John likes … at a high speed. (drive)
7. Stop … about your troubles. (worry)
8. Jack was proud of … the first prize for…. (get/ jump)
9. Helen was so angry that she left without… a word. (say)

Упражнение 2. Образуйте герундий от соответствующих глаголов и вставьте его в диалог.

5. get/be used to — привыкнуть что-то делать/ иметь привычку что-то делать (не путайте с used to – когда-то, бывало)
6. succeed in — преуспеть в
7. suspect of — подозревать в
8. accuse of — обвинять в
9. depend on — зависеть
10. object to — возражать против
11. approve of — одобрять что-то
12. excuse for smth — извиниться за что-то
13. appologize to smb for smth — извиниться перед кем-то за что-то
14. prevent from smth — помешать чему-то

Упражнение 4.Переведите предложения на русский язык.

1. She is very good at baking.
2. He was afraid of speaking to strangers.
3. I am looking forward to going on holiday.
4. I thanked her for helping me.

7. He congratulated his friend on entering the institute.

Упражнение 5.Раскройте скобки, употребляя герундий. Объясните, почему в данном случае надо употребить герундий.

III. Конструкции, в которых употребляется герундий

1. BUSY – I am busyreading this book. — Я занят чтением этой книги.
2. WORTH – The book is worthreading. — Эту книгу стоит прочитать.
3. BE USED TO — I am used toreading books in the evenings. — Я привык читать книги по вечерам.

1. idea of — идея
   1. I like the idea of going to the country. – Мне нравится идея поехать за город.
   2. I gave up the idea of going to the country. – Я отказался от идеи поехать за город.
2. possibility of — возможность
   1. There is no possibility of getting that information. — Нет возможности получить эту информацию.
3. point in / sense in / harm in/ difficulty in — смысл/ вред / труд
   1. There isn’t much point (sense) in doing it. — Нет большого смысла это делать.
   2. There is no harm in relaxing a little. — Нет вреда в том, чтобы немного отдохнуть.
   3. There is no difficulty in getting visa. — Нет труда в том, чтобы получить визу.
4. use of — толк, польза
   1. What’s the use of talking to him? — Что толку с ним разговаривать?
5. It’s no use/ It’s no good / It’s useless — Бесполезно
   1. It’s no use talking to him. — Бесполезно с ним разговаривать.

6. hope of — надежда
   1. There is no hope of seeing her there. — Нет никакой надежды встретить ее здесь.
7. way of — способ
   1. This is the best way of solving this problem. — Это лучший способ решения проблемы.
8. advantages of — преимущества
   1. What are the advantages of having a car? — Каковы преимущества приобретения машины?
9. a waste of — пустая трата
   1. It’s a waste of time reading this book. — Чтение этой книги — пустая трата времени.
   2. It’s a waste of money buying this book. — Покупка этой книги — пустая трата денег.
10. reason for — причина
    1. What’s your reason for doing it? — Какая у тебя причина это делать?

       Упражнение 6. Образуйте герундий от глагола в скобках и переведите предложение.

       1. It’s no use (explain) this difficult problem to Tom. He won’t understand.
       2. These educational articles are worth (read).
       3. I can’t help (laugh) when I watch a come­dy.
       4. My parents had no idea of my (come) back so soon.
       5. The girls were busy (pack).

       Упражнение 7. Раскройте скобки, употребляя герундий. Объясните, почему в данном случае надо употребить герундий.

       1. She couldn’t help (make) mistakes.
       2. The monument is worth (see).
       3. The problem is not worth (discuss).
       4. Do you mind my (ask) you a question?
       5. Would you mind my (come) again in a year?

       Упражнение 8. Замените придаточные предложения герундиальным оборотом с предлогом. Если не помните предлог, то воспользуйтесь подсказкой.

       1. Thank you that you invited me to the theatre.
       2. The woman insisted that her husband should consult the doctor at once.
       3. The thought that he had missed the party made him unhappy.
       4. The teacher insisted that the students should come after the lessons for a meeting.
       5. Helen suggested that they should go on a trip.
       6. I don’t mind if the children go to the station with me.

       Упражнение 9. Замените придаточные предложения герундиальным оборотом с предлогом.
       

       1. The teacher suggested that you should read English books every day.
       2. The place looked so beautiful that she thought that she would like to live there.
       3. In the darkness they were afraid that they might lose their way.
       4. Do you mind if I smoke here?
       5. My parents objected that I played computer games all day.

       Упражнение 10. Замените придаточные предложения времени герундием с предлогом after, on, before.

       ПРИМЕР Before translating the text, he underlined all the unknown words. — Прежде, чем переводить текст, он выписал все незнакомые слова.

       1. When they entered the house, they heard the strange noise.
       2. After she had passed the exams, she was very pleased.
       3. When he reached his destination, he sent a telegram home.
       4. Before I went out, I phoned Ann.
       5. When he entered, she stood up and left the room. She even didn’t look at him.
       6. Before Robert read the letter, he felt very worried.

       Упражнение 11. Переведите предложения с герундием на английский язык.

       1. Я настаиваю на том, чтобы помочь ей.
       2. Он отрицал, что видел ее.
       3. Она боится получить плохую оценку.

       Упражнение 12. Переведите предложения с герундием на английский язык.

       1. Я не могу не плакать, когда читаю эту историю.
       2. Я не могу не смеяться, когда смотрю этот фильм.
       3. Он с нетерпением ждет, когда они приедут.
       4. Мы стараемся избегать делать покупки в выходные.
       5. Я не расположен делать эту работу сегодня.
       6. Моя сестра гордится, тем что умеет говорить по- французски.
       7. Родители часто сердятся на меня, за то что я много играю в компьютер.
       8. Ты уже закончила мыть посуду?
       9. Она всегда мечтала о жизни в маленьком домике около моря.
       10. Ее не нравилось жить в старом доме.

       Упражнение 13. Переведите предложения с герундием на английский язык.

       1. Бессмысленно спорить с ним. (argue)
       2. Это место стоит посетить.
       3. Она не возражает против того, чтобы поработать сегодня.
       4. Я избегал разговора с ним по этому вопросу (on this matter).
       5. Он получал большое удовольствие от разговора о своем путешествии.
       6. Пожалуйста, перестаньте смеяться над ним.
       7. Они хорошо решают задачи по математике (to solve problems).

       Упражнения на герундий повышенной сложности

       Упражнение 14 ( на грамматическую конструкцию с герундием — To prevent smb from doing smth). Измените предложения согласно образцу.

       ОБРАЗЕЦ. The explorers couldn’t reach the southern boundaries of the desert because of the scorching heat and lack of fresh water. — The scorching heat and lack of fresh water prevented the explorers from reaching the southern boundaries of the desert.

       1. The day was foggy; the fishermen couldn’t see the coastline.
       2. It’s wet outdoors. Put on my raincoat, it will save you for a while.
       3. He couldn’t take part in the expedition because he was ill.
       4. She couldn’t be a good guide because of her poor knowlege of Englsh.
